Business Owner - Advertising VeteranMy Background spans over 20 years in the advertising industry. Starting in print media over twenty years ago, an era when full colour adverts were for the wealthy, and spot colour was the norm, and the fax machine was state of the art.
Twenty years ago the only advertising platforms were the local paper, print media and the yellow pages. Still today I see business owners calling there business " ABC Contracting " the reason people did that was to be at the top of the yellow pages!
Back then I worked on commission therefor if your advert didn't produce results, I didn't get paid. You learn very fast how to generate results. In the early days I sold advertising on newspapers, wall planners, desk pads and the radio. The days of print media including newspapers, yellow pages, working for you the advertiser are long gone.
A resent study study showed that over 70% of kiwis have a no circular sign on the letter box. Now when you buy a letter box it has the addressed mail only, sign already on it.
Newspapers are all online, by the time they print the news, you already know about it. If you need to know the news or weather you just google it.
Music radio as a form of lead generation is a complete waste of time and money, people don't need to hear the ads, in order to hear music anymore.
Music's on there phone, that blue tooth's to there car. That said, I think Talkback Radio still has its place - for now.
